Statement Regarding Expanded Recall of Takata Non-Desiccated Passenger Front Airbag Inflators

  • Recall expansion to occur ahead of NHTSA schedule due to significant progress in replacing airbag inflators in Honda and Acura vehicles previously recalled and because of adequate replacement parts supplies to service all affected models.
  • Prior to this expansion, Honda’s overall Takata inflator recall completion rate was greater than 2/3 of the affected units, which leads the industry by a significant margin.
  • Excluding vehicles also subject to prior Takata inflator recalls, approximately 158,000 Honda and Acura vehicles in Canada will be included in an expanded recall calling for the free replacement of non-desiccated Takata front passenger airbag inflators.
  • A total of approximately 263,289 vehicles, including those also subject to prior recalls, will be affected by this action.

In conjunction with the forth phase of planned recalls in the U.S. first announced by NHTSA in May 2016, Honda has decided to also conduct recalls in Canada covering approximately 263,289 Honda and Acura automobiles to replace, free of charge to vehicle owners, Takata passenger front airbag inflators that do not contain a moisture absorbing desiccant. Excluding any vehicles subject to the earlier Takata airbag inflator recalls, approximately 158,000 Honda and Acura vehicles in Canada will become subject to recall as a result of this action.

Honda decided to take this action early, ahead of NHTSA’s planned expansion date in late December 2018, because it has made significant progress in replacing airbag inflators in Honda and Acura vehicles previously recalled (completion rate as of 9/17/2018 was greater than 2/3 of the affected units) and because adequate replacement parts are currently available to service affected Acura and Honda models, including those in the expanded population. Owners of affected vehicles can seek recall service immediately at authorized Honda and Acura dealers.

No new driver front airbag inflators in Honda or Acura automobiles will be subject to recall in this action, as all potentially affected driver inflators are already subject to prior recalls. However, some vehicles whose airbag inflators were previously replaced under earlier driver’s front inflator recalls will now require replacement of those vehicles’ passenger front airbag inflators under this new action.

In addition, all Honda motorcycles equipped with defective Takata airbag inflators in Canada were included in earlier recalls and are now eligible for recall service, free-of-charge. There have been no Takata airbag inflator ruptures involving Honda motorcycles globally. For more information about the history of Honda motorcycle airbags, please visit

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer for replacement of their vehicle’s airbag inflator, as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers is expected begin in early October, 2018. Additionally, owners of the vehicle models listed below can determine if their vehicles will require recall service by going to www.honda.ca/recalls or by calling 1-877-445-7754 for Honda automobiles or www.acura.ca/recalls or by calling 1-877-445-9844 for Acura automobiles.

With this new action, a total of approximately 1.5 million Honda and Acura automobiles have been or now are subject to recall for replacement of a Takata driver and/or passenger front airbag inflator in Canada, with approximately 1,180 Honda motorcycles subject to recall for the replacement of the Takata airbag inflator module.
