Statement by Honda Canada Regarding Expanded Recall of Takata Non-Desiccated Passenger Front Airbag Inflators

  • Excluding vehicles also subject to prior Takata inflator recalls, approximately 93,000 Honda and Acura vehicles in Canada will be included in an expanded recall calling for the free replacement of non-desiccated Takata front passenger airbag inflators.
  • A total of approximately 128,426 vehicles, including those also subject to prior recalls, will be affected by this action.
  • Approximately 900 additional Honda Gold Wing motorcycles with airbags installed will also be recalled to replace Takata non-desiccated airbag inflator modules, including early recall of inflators scheduled to be recalled in Phase 4.

In conjunction with the third phase of planned recalls in the U.S. first announced by NHTSA in May 2016 based on recent Defect Information Reports (18E-001, 18E-002, and 18E-003) from the airbag inflator supplier Takata, Honda has decided to also conduct recalls in Canada covering approximately 128,426 Honda and Acura automobiles to replace, free of charge to vehicle owners, Takata passenger front airbag inflators that do not contain a moisture absorbing desiccant. Excluding any vehicles subject to the earlier Takata airbag inflator recalls, approximately 93,012 Honda and Acura vehicles in Canada will become subject to recall as a result of this action.

Including the recall announced today, Honda has adequate replacement part supplies to replace recalled Takata airbag inflators in all Honda and Acura models currently subject to recall in Canada. Owners of affected vehicles can seek recall service immediately at authorized Honda and Acura dealers.

No new driver front airbag inflators in Honda or Acura automobiles will be subject to recall in this action, as all potentially affected driver inflators are already subject to prior recalls. However, some vehicles whose airbag inflators were previously replaced under earlier driver’s front inflator recalls, will now require replacement of those vehicles’ passenger front airbag inflators under this new action.

In addition, 922 Honda Gold Wing Airbag motorcycles from the 2009-2010 and 2012-2016 model years will be recalled to replace their Takata non-desiccated airbag inflator modules. Due to the relatively small vehicle population and an adequate supply of replacement inflators, Honda has elected to pull forward the recall of motorcycles that would have been included in Phase 4 of NHTSA’s recall plan (scheduled for January 2019), placing them under recall earlier than required. With this action, all Honda motorcycles equipped with non-desiccated Takata airbag inflators in Canada are now subject to a recall. There have been no Takata airbag inflator ruptures involving Honda motorcycles globally. Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer for replacement of their vehicle’s airbag inflator, as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers is expected begin in the middle of January, 2018. Additionally, owners of the vehicle models listed below can determine if their vehicles will require recall service by going to www.honda.ca/recalls or by calling 1-877-445-7754 for Honda automobiles or www.acura.ca/recalls or by calling 1-877-445-9844 for Acura automobiles. Motorcycle customers can currently search at motorcycle.honda.ca/safety/recalls or they can call 1-877-445-7754 for Honda motorcycle recall information.

With this new action, a total of approximately 1,357,559 Honda and Acura automobiles have been or now are subject to recall for replacement of a Takata driver and/or passenger front airbag inflator in Canada, with approximately 1,180 Honda motorcycles subject to recall for the replacement of the Takata airbag inflator module.
