On Sept. 18, 2013, Honda Canada announced it would recall 23,314 Honda Odyssey vehicles from the 2003-2004 model years and 4,836 Acura MDX vehicles from the 2003 model year in Canada to address potential malfunctions of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) system in these vehicles that could result in an inadvertent airbag deployment. To prevent this potential malfunction, an electrical noise filter was installed adjacent to the SRS control unit as the original repair for this issue.
On January 27, 2015, this recall was updated with a revised remedy for the potential malfunction. The new repair will involve replacement of the SRS control unit with an updated unit in all affected vehicles.
In Canada, there have been no reported incidents of inadvertent airbag deployment in these vehicles resulting from this issue after the original recall repair was completed. To date, a small number of post-original repair complaints have been received in the United States. No collisions have been reported to Honda related to this issue.
The owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail in March and notified of the existence of this condition, and that updated SRS control units will become available at a later date. Until these parts for the final repair become available, owners of vehicles that have not already had the original repair involving noise filter installation, will be asked to take their vehicle to a Honda or Acura dealer to install the noise filter as a temporary repair. A second notification will be mailed to all affected owners when the updated SRS control units are available, and owners will be asked to take their vehicle to a Honda or an Acura dealer for the final repair. At that time, the dealer will remove the noise filter from vehicles that have had the repair applied, and all vehicles will have the SRS control unit replaced. Both repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners that have paid to have these repairs completed at their expense will be eligible for reimbursement.
