Statement by Honda Canada Regarding SRS Control Unit Recall: 2008-2010 Honda Accord Sedan

MARKHAM, ON – February 3, 2016 – Honda will voluntarily recall 23,343 units of 2008-2010 model-year Honda Accord Sedans in Canada to replace the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit. Manufacturing process issues may allow moisture to enter the circuitry within the SRS control unit which, over time, can cause corrosion and eventual malfunction of the unit. If the SRS control unit fails from this scenario, the SRS indicator warning will illuminate on the vehicle’s instrument panel and, in the event of a crash where deployment is necessary, the airbags may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury. Honda Motor Co. has confirmed two injuries related to this issue.

A new SRS control unit will be installed in affected vehicles, free of charge. However, due to the large volume of new parts needed to repair affected units, the necessary parts will not be available until Fall 2016. As a result, owners of affected vehicles will be informed of the recall in an initial mailed notification letter in mid-March 2016. A second notification will be sent to inform owners when parts become available.

In the interim, if a vehicle included in this recall displays the SRS indicator warning, vehicle owners are advised to visit an authorized Honda dealer for a diagnostic check as soon as possible. If the check indicates the safety defect is present, the SRS control unit will be replaced free of charge using a limited supply of updated replacement parts.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage all owners of affected vehicles to take them to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification from Honda that replacement parts are available for their vehicles. In addition, owners of these vehicles can determine now if their vehicles will require repair by going to www.honda.ca/recalls or by calling (888) 9HONDA9.
