‘Insight Into Canada’ Tour Starts Month-Long Journey To Document Environmental Initiatives from Coast to Coast

VICTORIA, B.C.4/21/2009

VICTORIA, B.C. (April 21, 2009) – On the eve of Earth Day, a new 2010 Honda Insight EX hybrid car, designated “Insight Canada 1” – the very first Insight registered in Canada, departed from Trans-Canada Highway Mile Marker Zero in Victoria en route across Canada in search of environmental initiatives that will be reported on daily.  The reports, including photos, video and a ‘narrative’ by the Insight Canada 1 car, will be posted on a special website – www.insightintocanada.ca

Journalists from across the country will drive a total of 23 separate legs during the month-long “Insight Into Canada” journey that ends May 22 at Trans-Canada Highway Mile Marker Zero in St. John’s, Nfld.  On each leg, the journalists will be checking the “environmental pulse” of Canadians, visiting earth-friendly locations and inspirational people who are doing their share to lessen our country's carbon footprint, reduce energy use or improve recycling efforts.

“We’re excited to be able to document and celebrate the numerous environmental initiatives and achievements by Canadians from coast to coast,” said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc.  “The more that Canadians understand the environmental issues we are facing as well as the numerous things that can be done to reduce our impact on the environment, the more we can ensure blue skies for our children.

“Concern for the environment is not new for Honda.  In fact, it was about 40 year ago – long before most people were even remotely aware of environmental issues – when a group of concerned Honda engineers set a goal to develop technologies that would help preserve ‘Blue Skies for our Children,” said Mr. Chenkin.  “Their vision was to protect our environment and ensure a sustainable future for personal mobility.  This has been a hallmark of Honda’s dedication and the products we have produced over the years.

“We can’t think of a better vehicle to make this celebratory cross-country venture than the new Honda Insight, which is Canada’s most affordable hybrid vehicle that incorporates a full complement of safety features and fun-to-drive character.  In addition to excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions, Insight also incorporates a full complement of safety features and fun-to-drive character.  Besides making sound environmental sense with higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions, the affordable Insight has brought us to an era where hybrid technology also makes financial sense for a broader range of Canadians."

The all-new Honda Insight hybrid 5-passenger hatchback goes on sale on Earth Day, April 22, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $23,900 for the Insight LX.  A premium version – Insight EX – is available with an MSRP of $27,500, and adds Honda’s Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Bilingual Voice Recognition; Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®); Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®; special alloy wheels; steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters; an upgraded audio system; and more.

The distinctively styled, 5-passenger dedicated hybrid vehicle is powered by an Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA™) system comprised of a 1.3-litre i-VTEC® gasoline engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor that together contribute to a Transport Canada fuel economy rating of 4.8 L/100 km (city) and 4.5 L/100 km (highway) and ultra-low emissions.

The Insight introduces Honda’s Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist™) to help drivers achieve improved real-world fuel economy. Eco Assist™ is a feature designed to help drivers optimize fuel efficiency for their given set of driving conditions. Pressing a dash-mounted ECON button further enhances the efficiency of multiple vehicle systems, including throttle control, CVT operation, idle-stop duration, air conditioning and cruise-control operation.

Eco Assist™ also provides feedback to the driver about his or her driving style via a 3D-appearing background within the speedometer. The background changes colours from blue to green to reflect how efficiently or inefficiently the driver is accelerating or braking. The driver’s results are continuously tracked as fuel economy ratings are shown per drive cycle and on a lifetime basis in the form of plant-leaf graphics that appear in the Multi-Information Display (MID). Up to five leaves can be ‘earned’ as the driver demonstrates a fuel-efficient driving style.

A full complement of standard safety features on all Insights include dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags; front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbag system; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD); driver’s and front-passenger’s active head restraints; and a front body designed to mitigate pedestrian injuries.  Insight also features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE™) body structure, which provides improved frontal-crash compatibility between vehicles of differing size and ride height.

Honda Canada, now in its 40th year of operation in Canada, manufactures the Honda Civic sedan and coupe, and the Acura CSX and MDX at its two plants in Alliston, Ontario, and produces fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engines at its engine plant adjacent to the Honda manufacturing facilities.
